Songkran Water Festival: Ping Pong Popper
Did You Know? Did you know that Songkran is sometimes called the world’s largest water fight? In 2024, almost 2 million international travellers came to Thailand to celebrate the festival. The biggest water fights occur in the largest tourist destinations like Bangkok, Chiang Mai and Phuket. In Pattaya, the celebration and fight lasts all week! When to Celebrate While traditionally the date of the festival would happen on the first full moon in April, which is when the astrological passage of the sun from Pisces to Aries occurs, it has recently been officially changed to the 13-15th of April every year. Songkran marks the start of the Buddhist New Year, and water is used to represent purification and the washing away of the old year. So while the water fights are fun, there are real and ancient rituals and reasons behind them.
