Did You Know?

Did you know that Songkran is sometimes called the world’s largest water fight? In 2024, almost 2 million international travellers came to Thailand to celebrate the festival. The biggest water fights occur in the largest tourist destinations like Bangkok, Chiang Mai and Phuket. In Pattaya, the celebration and fight lasts all week!

When to Celebrate

While traditionally the date of the festival would happen on the first full moon in April, which is when the astrological passage of the sun from Pisces to Aries occurs, it has recently been officially changed to the 13-15th of April every year. Songkran marks the start of the Buddhist New Year, and water is used to represent purification and the washing away of the old year. So while the water fights are fun, there are real and ancient rituals and reasons behind them.

The Toolkit

To build your wind tube gun, gather these supplies:

  • Potato Chip Can
  • Balloon
  • Ping-Pong Ball
  • Beverage Cans
  • Double-sided tape
  • Scissors & Craft Knife: (Safety First: Always ask an adult for assistance when using sharp cutting tools.)

The Build: Step-by-Step

1.Print and Prepare:  Print all templates onto A4 papers. 

2.Precision Cutting: Carefully cut out the icons along the solid lines.
 -Safety Tip: ASK an ADULT for help when using cutting tools!

3.Build the Body: Carefully use a craft knife to cut off the bottom of the potato chip can.
-Safety Tip: ASK an ADULT for help when using cutting tools!

4.Install Balloon: Cut the top of the  balloon and stretch it over the potato chip can.

5.Decorate Cans: Attach the ‘Songkran’ icon and animal pictures onto the can.

*Notice: Careful when operating the ‘gun’, as the balloon may snap back, hitting your fingers.

Your creation is complete! Grab the Ping Pong Popper and compete with the kids to see who can get the highest score!

Success Checklist

  • Pull Test: Does the balloon pull back and remain firmly attached to the can?
  • Alignment Test: Does the ball fly straight? Is the slack in the balloon at the center of the circle?
  • Speed Test: Does the ball fly fast enough to knock down the cans? Is there a way you can adjust the balloon to make it fly faster? Slower?

Did You Know? Did you know that the wheel of cheese chosen for the annual competition is a Double Gloucester, and weighs up to 4kg, or almost 9 pounds? And while rolling down the hill, it has been clocked up to speeds of up to 112km/h, or 70mp/h? If the cheese were to hit you at that speed, the impact force would have roughly twice the power of a knockout punch from a professional heavyweight boxer, or about the same as being hit with a 5 gallon water jug thrown from a third floor balcony. When to Celebrate The Cooper’s Hill Cheese Rolling Festival occurs every year on the spring Bank Holiday in the United Kingdom, which falls on the last Monday of May annually. This day symbolically marks the transition from spring into summer. The Toolkit To build your Daring Downhill Descenders, gather these supplies: The amomii Template: [GET THE FREE TEMPLATE HERE] Cardstock or A4 Paper: (Use thicker paper for a stronger build) Glue or Double-Sided Tape Scissors or Craft Knife: (Safety First: Always ask an adult for assistance when using sharp cutting tools) 2 Marbles  A piece of Cardstock (for reinforcement) 2 Rubber Band The Build: Step-by-Step  Phase 1: Print & Cut  1.Print and Prepare: Print your template and cut out all the pieces.  Parts Needed (per character): 1 rectangular piece 2 capsule-shaped pieces: for extra durability, attach the capsule pieces onto cardstock backing before assembling. Phase 2: Build the Body 2. Fold the Base: Fold both sides of the rectangular piece as instructed to form the body structure. 3. Attach Capsules: Glue the capsule pieces onto both sides of the rectangle. This creates the outer shell. Phase 3: Add the Character 4. Attach Design: Glue the character design onto the structure—but don’t seal the entire body yet. Phase 4: Insert the Motion Mechanism 5. Add Marbles: Carefully place 2 marbles inside the body. Put another way, that spoonful of honey drizzled over your morning yogurt represents the work of bees visiting over 96 thousand flowers! When to Celebrate World Bee Day is celebrated every year on May 20th. This date was chosen because it was on this date in 1734 that Anton Jansa, the father of beekeeping, was baptized. His exact date of his birth is unknown, so the date of his baptism was chosen instead.
