Search for a soldering setup and you will be shown a bench that costs more than the projects you want to build on it. Fume extractor, microscope, articulated arms, a drawer system, a mat with a printed grid, three kinds of tweezers.
Almost none of that is necessary, and buying it up front is actively unhelpful. You do not yet know how you solder, so you cannot know which of those things solves a problem you actually have. Most of them solve problems you will never meet.
So this lesson is arranged the way you should buy: what you need on day one, what to add after your first board, and what only matters if you carry on. If you buy nothing past the first tier, you can still learn to solder properly, and thousands of people have.
By the end of this lesson you will be able to kit yourself out for very little, know exactly which upgrade solves which specific frustration, and confidently ignore the rest.
4.1 Tier one: what you actually need on day one
The aim of this section is to get you soldering for the least possible money, with nothing in the list that you could sensibly do without.
There are five things, and one of them you may already own.
A stand for the iron
This is the only item on the entire page that is genuinely non-negotiable. A soldering iron is a 350 °C object with no natural resting position, and the moment it is not in your hand it needs somewhere safe to be. Not the desk. Not balanced on a mug.
Most irons come with one. If yours came with a bent-wire coil, that is adequate, though a weighted stand is far better because you can drop the iron into it one-handed without looking, which is what you will actually do.
What to look for: enough weight that it does not skid when you push the iron in, and a cradle deep enough that the hot end cannot touch anything.
Something to clean the tip
You need this from the first minute, because a dirty tip stops transferring heat, which is Lesson 6's whole subject. Two options, and they are genuinely different:
- A damp sponge. Usually included. Works fine. It also thermally shocks the tip every time you wipe, because you are pressing 350 °C metal into cold water. Over years, that shortens tip life.
- Brass wool, a nest of fine brass curls in a small pot. You stab the tip into it. It scrapes the oxide off without cooling the tip at all, so the iron is ready to work immediately rather than needing a moment to recover.
Brass wool is better and costs very little. If you buy one upgrade from this entire lesson, this is the cheapest one with the clearest benefit.
There is also a quieter advantage that only shows up once you are actually using it: brass wool needs no water. A sponge has to be found, wetted, and squeezed out to damp rather than wet before every session, and it dries out mid-build, and it lives on your bench as a wet thing. Brass wool sits in its pot indefinitely and is simply always ready. That is a small daily friction removed, and small daily frictions are what decide whether a habit like wipe-and-tin actually happens.
A sponge still works, though, and starting with the one that came in the box is completely reasonable.
Flush cutters
For trimming component legs after soldering, which is the last step in Lesson 8. The flush part matters: one face is flat, so laid against the board it cuts close and leaves a tidy stub rather than the sharp diagonal spike ordinary side cutters leave behind.
Cheap ones are fine to start with. They will eventually notch, and you will notice.
Solder
Covered in Lesson 3. A small reel, 0.7 or 0.8 mm, rosin cored or no-clean.
Something to practice on
Do not make your first ever joints on the thing you care about. Lesson 13 covers what makes a good practice target, but the summary is: a cheap practice board, an old dead appliance board you can butcher, or a kit whose early steps are forgiving.

4.2 Tier two: add these after your first board
The aim of this section is to name the specific frustrations you will meet, so that each purchase is a response to something rather than a guess.
Everything here solves a problem you will have felt. That is why it is worth waiting.
A way to hold the work
The frustration: you have two hands. The iron takes one, the solder takes the other, and the board needs a third. You will end up wedging it against a book, and it will move at the worst moment.
The fix, in ascending order of cost:
- Poster putty or masking tape. Genuinely effective and nearly free.
- A "third hand" or "helping hands", a weighted base with articulated arms and crocodile clips. Cheap, fiddly to adjust, and much better than nothing.
- A small PCB vice. Holds a board flat, rotates, and stays where you put it. If you are going to build several boards, this is the one that stops being a gadget and starts being furniture.
A heat-resistant mat
The frustration: a bead of solder falls on your desk, or a hot tip grazes it. Also, small parts roll away and vanish.
A silicone mat handles all of it, costs very little, and rolls up. Some have molded compartments for screws, which is a genuine convenience rather than a gimmick.
Better light
The frustration: you cannot actually see the joint, so you are working by feel.
This is the most underrated item on the whole page. A cheap adjustable desk lamp positioned to the side, not behind your head, transforms the job. Side lighting throws shadows across the joint surface, which is exactly what lets you read its shape, and reading the shape is how you check your work in Lesson 9.
Fix your lighting before you buy magnification. Most people who think they need a microscope need a lamp.
Magnification
The frustration: the print on the board is too small, or your eyes are not what they were.
- Reading glasses, even cheap ones, are the simplest answer for close work.
- A headband magnifier leaves both hands free and is easy to flip up.
- A magnifying lamp combines the last two items and is a very civilized object.
Tweezers
The frustration: placing a small part, or holding something hot.
A pair of fine straight tweezers and a pair of bent ones will cover everything through-hole. Do not spend much yet.
A flux pen
The frustration: you are reheating a joint and it will not flow, because as Lesson 3 explained, the flux in the original solder was spent the first time.
A flux pen puts fresh flux exactly where you need it and instantly makes rework feel possible. It becomes essential the moment you start Lesson 10, and slightly magical the first time you use one.

4.3 Tier three: only if you carry on
The aim of this section is to describe the deep end honestly, including which parts of it are worth it and which are bought more often than they are used.
Desoldering tools
A solder sucker and a roll of desoldering braid are the two ways to get solder off a board. They are cheap, and the first time you put a component in backwards you will want one. Arguably this belongs in tier two the moment you make your first real mistake. Lesson 10 covers how to use both.
Fume extraction
Section 3.5 explained that the smoke is flux, not lead, and that rosin fume is a respiratory sensitizer worth not breathing repeatedly.
The honest ladder:
- An open window genuinely helps and costs nothing.
- A small desk fan set to draw air across the bench and away from your face does most of the remaining work. This is the best value step by a wide margin.
- A filtered extractor with activated carbon is what actually captures the fume rather than moving it elsewhere. Worth it if you solder often, and much less compelling for occasional building. Cheap ones with a thin foam pad are close to theater.

Isopropyl alcohol and a stiff brush
For cleaning flux residue off a finished board. With no-clean flux you can leave it, but a cleaned board looks noticeably more finished, and it also makes inspection easier because you are looking at metal rather than at sticky residue.
Tip tinner
A small pot of active chemical tinning compound, an aggressive flux mixed with fine tin powder, which revives a tip that has gone dull and stopped taking solder. ⚠️ It works chemically rather than by abrasion, which matters: abrading a tip destroys its plating permanently, and this does not. Section 6.5 covers when to reach for it, and more importantly how to avoid needing it.
A multimeter
Not a soldering tool, but the thing that turns "I think that joint is fine" into "that joint is fine". Even a very cheap one with a continuity beeper is enormously useful, and Lesson 9 uses it.
What we would not rush to buy
- A soldering microscope. Genuinely necessary for fine surface-mount work, and Lesson 12 explains why that is a different discipline. For through-hole, a lamp and reading glasses do it.
- A hot air rework station. Same answer. Surface-mount territory.
- A large assortment of tips. You will use one chisel tip for almost everything.
- An ultrasonic cleaner. A brush and some isopropyl gets you there.
4.4 A word about what we sell
The aim of this section is to declare our interest, briefly, and then get out of the way.
We should say it plainly, as we do everywhere else in this course. We are amomii, and we sell a soldering kit. The amomii Quill kit is USD 100.00 and includes the iron, a stand and cleaning sponge, lead-free solder, a flush cutter, the power supply and cable, plus a macropad to build with it.
Two honest observations about that, which you can use however you like.
A bundled kit is convenient rather than cheap. You are paying for one decision instead of six, and for the pieces being known to work together. If you would rather assemble your own tier one from four separate purchases, you can do it for less money, and it will work perfectly well. That is a legitimate choice and we are not going to pretend it is a mistake.
The one thing worth checking in any bundle, ours included, is the iron, because that is the part you cannot easily upgrade later without buying a whole new one. Everything else in tier one is a few dollars and swappable at any time. Lesson 2 is the lesson that matters for that decision, not this one.
What this sets up
Lesson 5, safety and your bench, is the other half of the ventilation and eye-protection question, and it is where the non-negotiables live.
Lesson 6, tinning and tip care, is where your choice between a sponge and brass wool starts to matter.
Lesson 10, desoldering and rework, is where the flux pen and the desoldering tools earn their place.
Frequently asked questions
What do I need to start soldering? An iron, a stand for it, something to clean the tip, solder, flush cutters, and something to practice on. That is the whole list. Everything else can wait until you have felt the problem it solves.
Brass wool or a wet sponge, which is better? Brass wool. It scrapes oxide off without cooling the tip, whereas a wet sponge thermally shocks it every wipe. A sponge still works, and starting with the one in the box is fine.
Do I need helping hands for soldering? Not on day one. You will want some way to hold the work by your second board. Poster putty and masking tape genuinely work; a small PCB vice is the version that stops feeling like a compromise.
Do I need a fume extractor? Not to start. An open window plus a small fan moving air away from your face does most of the work. A filtered extractor with activated carbon is worth it if you solder often. Cheap foam-pad ones do very little.
Should I buy a soldering kit or separate pieces? A bundle buys convenience and a set of parts known to work together. Buying separately is usually cheaper. Either is fine. The one component worth deliberating over is the iron, because it is the hardest to upgrade later.
What is a flux pen for? Adding fresh flux to a joint you are reheating. The flux in the original solder was spent the first time it melted, which is why old joints resist reflowing. It makes rework dramatically easier.
Do I need magnification? Probably not. Fix your lighting first. A lamp placed to the side casts shadows across a joint that let you read its shape, which is most of what people reach for magnification to do.
