Seasonal Schematics Craft

Welcome to Seasonal Schematics Craft (SSC), a crafty celebration of our wonderfully whacky world! From the lantern-lit streets of Lunar New Year to the colorful traditions of Diwali, we explore the globe through the lens of hands-on engineering.

We transform household "found objects" like rubber bands and bottle caps into interactive marvels that the whole family can enjoy. Join us as we bridge the gap between simple crafts and subtle STEM, proving that with a little imagination, the entire world is a playground waiting to be built.

World Bee Day: Bee Bookmark

World Bee Day: Bee Bookmark

Did You Know? Did you know that, to get one pound of honey, bees need to visit and collect nectar from almost two million flowers! That means that it takes the nectar of over a billion flowers to feed the honey appetite of the American public every year! Put another way, that spoonful of honey drizzled over your morning yogurt represents the work of bees visiting over 96 thousand flowers! When to Celebrate World Bee Day is celebrated every year on May 20th. This date was chosen because it was on this date in 1734 that Anton Jansa, the father of beekeeping, was baptized. His exact date of his birth is unknown, so the date of his baptism was chosen instead. The Toolkit To build your Bee Bookmark, gather these supplies: The amomii Template: [GET THE FREE TEMPLATE HERE] Double-Sided Tape Scissors: (Safety First: Always ask an adult for assistance when using sharp cutting tools.) The Build: Step-by-Step 1.Print and Prepare:  Print the templates on A4 paper and gather all necessary materials.-Tip: Use thicker paper for a sturdier pull-tab. 2.Precise Cutting: Carefully cut out all icons and parts along the solid black lines.-Safety Tip: ASK an ADULT for help when using cutting tools! 3.Create a Tab: Fold three times along the dashed line.  4.Create the Wings: Put double-sided tape on the back of the wings. Stick them in the right spots as shown in the picture.  Your creation is complete!  Share your Bee Bookmark with us! Success Checklist Pull-Tab Check: If the pull-tab doesn’t open and close smoothly, press the folds more firmly to sharpen the creases. Wing Alignment Check: Ensure the wings are positioned correctly so the patterns align perfectly.  Get Your Templates Sign up for free weekly templates delivered to your inbox. Earth Day: Recycligator

Earth Day: Recycligator

Did You Know? Did you know that Earth Day is the world’s largest non-religious festival? It’s celebrated annually by over a billion people in almost 200 countries worldwide! It’s meant to bring awareness to issues such as climate change, and the need to cooperate to help protect our shared natural resources. When to Celebrate Earth Day falls on April 22nd every year. Because Earth Day started as a protest movement, that date was specifically chosen because it fell between spring break and final exams during the spring college semester, and was meant to allow students to more easily participate in demonstrations. The Toolkit To build your Recycligator, gather these supplies: The amomii Template: [GET THE FREE TEMPLATE HERE] Cardboard Double-Sided Tape Hot Glue Gun(Safety Tip: ASK an ADULT for help when using a hot glue gun.) Popsicle sticks (8.5 cm x 1.7cm) Barbecue Bamboo Skewers (or Bamboo Chopsticks), 3 pcs: S1(3cm), S2(5cm), and S3(10.5cm) Scissors & Craft Knife: (Safety First: Always ask an adult for assistance when using sharp cutting tools.) The Build: Step-by-Step Phase 1: Build the Bottom 1.Print and Prepare:  Print the templates on A4 paper and gather all necessary materials. 2.Mount and Cut:Using double-sided tape, mount the templates onto cardboard, then carefully cut out all the pieces. -Safety Tip: ASK an ADULT for help when using cutting tools. 3.Build the Mechanism: Glue S1 to the popsicle stick at the 3cm mark. Then, slide S1 through the vertical supports and secure them to the baseplate.-Safety Tip: ASK an ADULT for help when using a hot glue gun. 4.Install the Button: Attach the top piece to the vertical supports and glue the crescent-shaped cardboard to the flat side of the popsicle stick.-Safety Tip: ASK an ADULT for help when using a hot glue gun.   Phase 2: Build the Body 5.Prepare the Cover: Cut the cup horizontally 3 cm from the base. Then, cut a 3 cm x 2 cm opening into the sides. -Safety Tip: ASK an ADULT for help when using cutting tools. 6.Assemble the Body: Glue the cup sections together to form the main body.-Safety Tip: ASK an ADULT for help when using a hot glue gun. Phase 3: Build the Top 7.Build the Pivot: Slide S2 through the small cardboard piece, then attach them to the cup.-Safety Tip: ASK an ADULT for help when using a hot glue gun. 8.Attach the Support Rod: Glue the tail piece to S3 and thread it through the pivot area. Securely glue the rod to the popsicle stick at the base of the project.-Safety Tip: ASK an ADULT for help when using a hot glue gun. 9.Attach the Lid: Glue the lid onto the pivot.-Safety Tip: ASK an ADULT for help when using a hot glue gun! 10.Decorate Recycligator: Apply the decorations to your project. Your creation is complete! Use it to collect paper, plastic, or small metal items at your desk.Happy Earth Day! Success Checklist Bottom Mechanism CheckDepress the plunger at the front of your Recycligator to ensure the lid opens easily and smoothly. You may need to adjust the length of S3 if the mechanism isn’t working to your satisfaction. Get Your Templates Sign up for free weekly templates delivered to your inbox. Unsubscribe at any time. New Year: The Cubic Calendar

New Year: The Cubic Calendar

Did You Know? In Spain, they don’t just count down to the New Year—they eat for it! As the clock strikes midnight, it is tradition to ram twelve grapes down your throat, one for every chime of the bell. If you can finish all twelve in those twelve seconds, you’re guaranteed a year of good luck. To help you keep track of all that upcoming luck, we’ve engineered a calendar that shifts and turns just as fast as those midnight grapes! When to Celebrate The world hits "reset" every January 1st, but this Cubic Calendar is designed to keep you organized all year long. It’s the perfect desk companion for anyone who thinks a standard wall calendar is just a bit too... stationary. The Toolkit To build your Cubic Calendar, gather these supplies: The amomii Template: [GET THE FREE TEMPLATE HERE] Cardstock or A4 Paper: (Use thicker paper for a stronger, more satisfying "flip!") Adhesive Tape: (Clear office tape works best for the hinges). Double-sided Tape: (Recommended for the box assembly for instant adhesion). Scissors or Craft Knife: (Safety First: Always ask an adult for assistance when using sharp cutting tools.) The Build: Step-by-Step Phase 1: Creating the 8 Blocks 1. Print and Prepare: Print all the cube templates from your ssc_01_calendar_tem1 onto A4 paper. Using thicker cardstock will make your finished engineering much more durable.  2. Precision Cutting: Carefully cut along all the solid lines using your scissors or craft knife. Avoid cutting the dotted lines—those are your fold guides! 3. Apply Adhesive: Apply your double-sided tape onto all the adhesive flaps.  4. Box Assembly: Fold along the lines to form a box shape and press the tabs down firmly for an instant bond. Repeat this until you have 8 perfect paper cubes.  5. The Layout: Arrange your 8 cubes into two neat rows of four cubes each. Ensure the illustrations on your cubes perfectly match the reference photo; correct alignment now is the key to ensuring your calendar flips correctly later! 6. The First Hinges: Apply clear tape to the four locations marked 1, 2, 3, and 4 in the diagram below . You must use four strips of tape and be careful not to stick the rows together. 7. Center Connections: Apply tape to the top and bottom middle sections at locations 5 and 6 as shown in the reference image. 8. The Flip and Secure: Carefully flip all the cubes over as one unit. Apply tape to the two new locations marked 7 and 8 in the diagram.  9. The Fold: Gently fold the left row of cubes over the right row (folding the entire assembly in half). 10. The Final Link: Apply a single piece of tape to the final spot marked 9 in the picture below.  Your creation is complete! Now flop and fold your Cubic Calendar around to find each month as shown below. January and February March and April  May June July August September October November and December   Success Checklist Hinge Check: Do the cubes rotate freely? If they feel stiff, ensure your tape hinges aren't too tight. Alignment: Do the illustrations line up when you flip the blocks? "The Loop Test:" Does the calendar cycle through all 12 months in a continuous loop without forcing the hinges? The Science Link: Kinematic Chains The Cubic Calendar is a classic example of a Kinematic Chain. By connecting solid parts (the cubes) with flexible joints (the tape), we create a loop that can move in a predictable, repeating pattern. It’s the same logic used in machines such as foldable space telescopes (look them up... they're insane!)! [GET THE FREE TEMPLATE HERE] Show us your Cubic Calendar!
