Cinco de Mayo: Many-Faced Man

Did You Know?

Did you know that Cinco De Mayo is known in Mexico as El Dia de la Batalla de Puebla? The day celebrates an important Mexican victory in the Franco-Mexican war, which occurred in the city of Puebla. During that battle, a group of 2000 Mexican soldiers defeated the larger French force of 6000 soldiers, and defended the city. The holiday is a minor one in Mexico, and is celebrated mostly in the city of Puebla only.

When to Celebrate

Like the name suggests, Cinco de Mayo is celebrated on the fifth of May every year. The day marks the Battle of Puebla, which happened on May 5th, 1862.

The Toolkit

To build your Many-Faced Man, gather these supplies:

  • Double-Sided Tape
  • Paper Cups
  • Scissors & Craft Knife: (Safety First: Always ask an adult for assistance when using sharp cutting tools.)

The Build: Step-by-Step

Phase 1: Preparation

1.Print and Prepare: Print the templates on A4 paper and gather all necessary materials.

2.Precise Cutting: Carefully cut out all icons and parts along the solid black lines.
-Safety Tip: ASK an ADULT for help when using cutting tools!
-Fun Tip: Feel free to pick your favorite expressions, or cut them all out for more variety!

Phase 2: Build the Hat

3.Prepare the Base: Apply double-sided tape to the back of Ring-A.

4.Construct the Brim: Fold the brim pieces along the dashed lines and secure them together with double-sided tape.

5.Attach the Brims: Attach the two brim pieces to Ring A.

6.Form the Hat Body: Fold along the dashed line and apply double-sided tape around the top of the cylinder.

7.Assemble the Hat Body: Roll it into a cylinder, then attach the circular piece to the top.

8.Final Touches: Place Ring B on top of Ring A.


Phase 3: Create the Face

9.Wrap the Cup: Apply double-sided tape to both ends of the face template and wrap it around the first cup. Cut along the face outline on the cup. 

10.Cut face outline: Cut along outline on cup. 

11.Attach the Expressions: Stick your top three expressions onto the second paper cup.
-Tip:  Each cup works best with up to three faces. To add more, simply prepare extra cups for quick swapping.

12.Assemble and Play: Slide the expression cup into the window cup. Rotate the inner cup to change the mood!

Your creation is complete!  

Success Checklist

Rotation Check:
-Ensure a small gap is left between the cups for smooth rotation. 
-Ensure the expressions are placed side by side and are fully exposed through the cutout of the outer cup.

Did You Know? Did you know that the wheel of cheese chosen for the annual competition is a Double Gloucester, and weighs up to 4kg, or almost 9 pounds? And while rolling down the hill, it has been clocked up to speeds of up to 112km/h, or 70mp/h? If the cheese were to hit you at that speed, the impact force would have roughly twice the power of a knockout punch from a professional heavyweight boxer, or about the same as being hit with a 5 gallon water jug thrown from a third floor balcony. When to Celebrate The Cooper’s Hill Cheese Rolling Festival occurs every year on the spring Bank Holiday in the United Kingdom, which falls on the last Monday of May annually. This day symbolically marks the transition from spring into summer. The Toolkit To build your Daring Downhill Descenders, gather these supplies: The amomii Template: [GET THE FREE TEMPLATE HERE] Cardstock or A4 Paper: (Use thicker paper for a stronger build) Glue or Double-Sided Tape Scissors or Craft Knife: (Safety First: Always ask an adult for assistance when using sharp cutting tools) 2 Marbles  A piece of Cardstock (for reinforcement) 2 Rubber Band The Build: Step-by-Step  Phase 1: Print & Cut  1.Print and Prepare: Print your template and cut out all the pieces.  Parts Needed (per character): 1 rectangular piece 2 capsule-shaped pieces: for extra durability, attach the capsule pieces onto cardstock backing before assembling. Phase 2: Build the Body 2. Fold the Base: Fold both sides of the rectangular piece as instructed to form the body structure. 3. Attach Capsules: Glue the capsule pieces onto both sides of the rectangle. This creates the outer shell. Phase 3: Add the Character 4. Attach Design: Glue the character design onto the structure—but don’t seal the entire body yet. Phase 4: Insert the Motion Mechanism 5. Add Marbles: Carefully place 2 marbles inside the body. These will create the rolling motion. 6. Seal the Body: Glue and close the remaining parts to fully enclose the marbles. Phase 5: Final Assembly 7. When to Celebrate World Bee Day is celebrated every year on May 20th. This date was chosen because it was on this date in 1734 that Anton Jansa, the father of beekeeping, was baptized. His exact date of his birth is unknown, so the date of his baptism was chosen instead.
