Mid Autumn Festival: Mid Autumn Box Lantern

Mid Autumn Festival: Mid Autumn Box Lantern

Did You Know?

Did you know the legend behind the Mid-Autumn Festival? The story follows Hou Yi, a heroic archer tasked with saving the land from a dire disaster. Ten suns blazed in the sky, destroying crops and drying up lakes and rivers. Using his mystical bow, Hou Yi shot down nine of the suns, leaving just one to provide perfect light and warmth.

For his heroic deed, he was gifted an elixir of immortality. However, Hou Yi chose not to drink it because it was only enough for one person, and he couldn't bear to live forever without his beloved wife, Chang'e. Instead, he gave it to her to keep safe.

One day, while Hou Yi was out hunting, his apprentice, Peng Meng, broke into their home to steal the elixir. To stop the villain from gaining godlike power, Chang'e drank the elixir herself. Her body instantly became lighter than air, and she floated up into the sky.

Wanting to stay as close as possible to her true love, she chose the moon as her new home.  When Hou Yi returned and discovered the heartbreaking loss, he laid out Chang'e's favorite fruits and cakes on an altar, hoping to entice her back. This ancient tradition of offering cakes and pomelos is why we still enjoy them today during the Mid-Autumn Festival!

When to Celebrate

The Moon Festival is celebrated on the 15th day of the 8th month of the lunar calendar. Because the lunar calendar shifts, this festive date typically falls between early September and mid-October.

The Toolkit

To build your Mid-Autumn Box Lantern, gather these supplies:

  • The amomii Template: [GET THE FREE TEMPLATE HERE]

  • Hot Glue Gun

  • Scissors & Craft Knife (Safety First: Always ask an adult for assistance when using sharp cutting tools.)

  • 16 Popsicle Sticks (4 sticks for each lantern panel)

  • 5 Wooden Dowels

  • Red Construction Paper (for the hanging ornaments)

  • 1 Plastic Straw (cut to length as needed)

  • Yarn (cut to length as needed)

  • Mini LED Light

The Build: Step-by-Step

Phase 1: Print & Prepare

1. Print and Prepare: Print out your template and carefully cut out all the paper lantern panels.

Phase 2: Build the Lantern Frame

2. Reinforce the Lantern Panels: For each of the 4 lantern sides, gather 4 popsicle sticks. Attach the sticks along the borders of each paper panel using double-sided tape as shown in the template.

3. Create the Box Shape: Join the 4 completed panels side-by-side to form a sturdy, four-sided box structure.

Phase 3: Strengthen the Structure

4. Install the Wooden Dowels: Measure and place two wooden dowels diagonally across the top face of the lantern to form an "X" shape. Repeat this exact process for the bottom face of the lantern.

5. Secure the Frame:  Use a hot glue gun to secure all connection points, especially the outer corners where the dowels meet the popsicle sticks and the center where the dowels cross.

Phase 4: Make the Hanging Ornaments

6. Prepare the Red Paper: Cut a piece of red paper into thin, even strips, making sure to leave the very top section uncut to hold the fringe together.

7. Roll the Ornament: Wrap the uncut top portion of the paper tightly around a small piece of plastic straw, applying glue as you roll to lock it in place.

8. Add the Hanging Loop: Fold a piece of yarn in half to create a loop. Thread the loop up through the straw piece and secure it firmly at the top with glue.

Phase 5: Install the LED Light

9. Prepare the Light: Securely tie a piece of yarn around your mini LED light

10. Hang the Light: Tie the other end of the yarn to the center of the top wooden dowels inside your lantern. Adjust the height so the LED light hangs right in the middle of the box, then trim any excess yarn.

Phase 6: Attach the Ornaments

11. Hang the Decorations: Thread your ornament yarn up through the bottom of the lantern and tie it to the top wooden dowels so the red tassel hangs beautifully underneath the box.

12. Add the Finishing Touch: Using a wooden dowel, wrap and secure the ornament yarn around it as shown in the reference picture. Add several wraps and knots to keep everything secure.

Your Mid-Autumn Box Lantern is complete! 🏮✨
Turn on your LED light, watch your beautiful lantern glow, and enjoy celebrating the Moon Festival with your family and friends!
