Cinco de Mayo: Many-Faced Man
Did You Know? Did you know that Cinco De Mayo is known in Mexico as El Dia de la Batalla de Puebla? The day celebrates an important Mexican victory in the Franco-Mexican war, which occurred in the city of Puebla. During that battle, a group of 2000 Mexican soldiers defeated the larger French force of 6000 soldiers, and defended the city. The holiday is a minor one in Mexico, and is celebrated mostly in the city of Puebla only. When to Celebrate Like the name suggests, Cinco de Mayo is celebrated on the fifth of May every year. The day marks the Battle of Puebla, which happened on May 5th, 1862. Phase 2: Build the Hat 3.Prepare the Base: Apply double-sided tape to the back of Ring-A. 4.Construct the Brim: Fold the brim pieces along the dashed lines and secure them together with double-sided tape. 5.Attach the Brims: Attach the two brim pieces to Ring A. 6.Form the Hat Body: Fold along the dashed line and apply double-sided tape around the top of the cylinder. 7.Assemble the Hat Body: Roll it into a cylinder, then attach the circular piece to the top. 8.Final Touches: Place Ring B on top of Ring A. Phase 3: Create the Face 9.Wrap the Cup: Apply double-sided tape to both ends of the face template and wrap it around the first cup. Cut along the face outline on the cup. 10.Cut face outline: Cut along outline on cup. 11.Attach the Expressions: Stick your top three expressions onto the second paper cup.-Tip: Each cup works best with up to three faces. To add more, simply prepare extra cups for quick swapping. 12.Assemble and Play: Slide the expression cup into the window cup. Rotate the inner cup to change the mood! Your creation is complete! International Jazz Day: Moving Jazz Band
Did You Know? Did you know that International Jazz Day was declared in 2012 by UNESCO and the UN? It was initiated by Goodwill Ambassador, and world famous musician, Herbie Hancock. Jazz Day is meant to highlight jazz music and its diplomatic role of uniting people in all corners of the globe. It’s currently celebrated in over 200 countries worldwide. When to Celebrate The date chosen for International Jazz day was April 30th. This day was picked because it is the last day of Jazz Appreciation Month, or JAM, which itself was started in 2001 by the Smithsonian National Museum of American History. Print and Prepare: Print all templates and organize your parts before starting. 2. Precision Cutting: Carefully cut along all lines for each template piece. Accuracy is key for smooth movement later. Phase 2: Build the Control Mechanism 3. Prepare the Base Controller: Gather the stick, small cardboard, SK templates, and adhesive. 4. Attach SK Template: Stick the SK template onto the small cardboard, aligned closer to the right side. 5. Add the Control Stick: Cut the ice cream stick in half and attach both pieces at the front and back of the left side of the cardboard (the uncovered section). 6. Add the Control Stick: Cut the ice cream stick in half and attach both pieces at the front and back of the left side of the cardboard (the uncovered section). Phase 3: Prepare the Main Board 7. Main Board Setup: Take the main board template and fold the bottom black section. 8. Punch Holes: Punch all required holes as shown on the template. 9. Attach Control Base: Secure the small cardboard (control mechanism) to the bottom section of the main board without glue. Phase 4: Assemble the Moving Parts 10. Follow the Pivot Map: Use the Assembly Pivot Map from the template as your guide. 11. Left Section First: Start assembling from the left side using paper fasteners. Pay close attention—some fasteners should face inward, others outward. 12. Middle Section: Connect the three middle parts together first, then attach them to the main board. 13. Right Section: Complete the assembly by attaching the right-side components. Phase 5: Add the Characters 14. Layer the Design: Stick each colored character piece on top of the corresponding shadow body parts. This creates the final animated look. Phase 6: Build the Background 15. Prepare Background Board: Attach the two background templates onto the big cardboard base. 16. Attach Main Mechanism: Stick the main board onto the designated white section of the background.Secure the bottom part as shown in the reference. 17. Final Fasteners: Insert paper fasteners into each corner of the main board for stability. Earth Day: Recycligator
Did You Know? Did you know that Earth Day is the world’s largest non-religious festival? It’s celebrated annually by over a billion people in almost 200 countries worldwide! It’s meant to bring awareness to issues such as climate change, and the need to cooperate to help protect our shared natural resources. When to Celebrate Earth Day falls on April 22nd every year. Because Earth Day started as a protest movement, that date was specifically chosen because it fell between spring break and final exams during the spring college semester, and was meant to allow students to more easily participate in demonstrations. Songkran Water Festival: Ping Pong Popper
Did You Know? Did you know that Songkran is sometimes called the world’s largest water fight? In 2024, almost 2 million international travellers came to Thailand to celebrate the festival. The biggest water fights occur in the largest tourist destinations like Bangkok, Chiang Mai and Phuket. In Pattaya, the celebration and fight lasts all week! When to Celebrate While traditionally the date of the festival would happen on the first full moon in April, which is when the astrological passage of the sun from Pisces to Aries occurs, it has recently been officially changed to the 13-15th of April every year. Songkran marks the start of the Buddhist New Year, and water is used to represent purification and the washing away of the old year. So while the water fights are fun, there are real and ancient rituals and reasons behind them. Easter Sunday: Peek-a-Boo Bunny
Did You Know? Did you know that the world’s largest chocolate egg weighed in at over 7200kg? That’s about the same size as a full grown African elephant! For the average American, it would take over 1600 years to eat that much chocolate! When to Celebrate The official day for Easter is determined to be the first Sunday after the first full moon following the vernal equinox, which falls every year on March 21st. This was decided to be the method of deriving the date by the Council of Nicaea in the year 325. To make it more confusing, while all churches use the same formula, some churches follow the Gregorian calendar, while others follow the Julian calendar, which means that there are actually two different dates for Easter! Most people follow the Gregorian calendar, which means that the date typically falls sometime during the last week of March and the first week of April. April Fool’s Day: Auto Foldy Face
Did You Know? Did you know that there is a border collie named Chaser who was taught to understand over 1000 words? That means that Chaser knew about as many words as a four year old child! In comparison, a trained dolphin typically has a vocabulary of around 50 to 60 words. When to Celebrate There are many theories as to why we celebrate April 1st as April Fool’s Day. One popular idea is that until the 1500s, New Year’s Day was celebrated on the first of April, until it was changed to January first. For a while, there were people that were not used to the new date, and still celebrated the New Year in April, which was now four months too late. These people were known as April Fools. (W-5→W-7, W-6→W-8, W-2→W-9 & W-10) This creates the outward tension needed for the "snap" action! Phase 3: Build the Control Area 7.Build Main Control: Link the switch to the dogbone, then position the mini board over the paper towel roll. -Tip: Ensure the string runs underneath the paper towel roll! They receive flower garlands, tasty treats, and blessings, because they are believed to be loyal protectors and true friends. 🐾 When to Celebrate National Puppy Day is celebrated every year on March 23 in the United States. Meanwhile, Kukur Tihar takes place during the Tihar festival in Nepal (usually in October or November, depending on the lunar calendar). No matter where you are in the world, it’s the perfect time to honor, love, and play with your furry friends! Saint Patrick's Day: Wobblerchauns
Did You Know? Did you know that Ireland’s original national color was actually blue? In the 1600s, the Irish switched to green as an act of defiance to separate themselves from British royalty. Folklore also says that wearing green makes you invisible to leprechauns. If they can’t see you, they can’t pinch you! When to Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day is celebrated annually on March 17th. This date marks the traditional death date of Saint Patrick (c. 385 – c. 461), the foremost patron saint of Ireland. What started as a religious feast day in the 17th century has evolved into a global celebration of Irish culture, history, and—of course—the color green. It’s the perfect time of year to celebrate "luck," master the physics of balance, and ensure you remain completely invisible to those pesky, pinching leprechauns! The Science Link: Center of Gravity & Stability Your "Wobblerchaun" stays upright thanks to its Center of Gravity (CoG)—the point where its weight is perfectly balanced. By weighting the curved base, we "pull" the CoG as low as possible. International Women's Day: 4 Image Fold
Did You Know? In 1912, thousands of women took to the streets of Lawrence, Massachusetts, with a demand that changed everything: "Bread and Roses." Inspired by the words of activist Helen Todd, the strikers sent a bold message that survival—the "bread"—simply isn’t enough; everyone deserves the right to thrive and find beauty—the "roses." This week, we’re honoring that spirit with a craft that is a literal lesson in perspective! We’ve designed a custom Infinity Folder that takes a "basic" flat surface and unfolds it to reveal the layers of beauty hidden within—because why settle for just survival when you can have the roses, too? When to Celebrate International Women’s Day is celebrated annually on March 8th. This date was chosen to commemorate the 1917 strike by women textile workers in Petrograd, Russia, which sparked the Russian Revolution. Following the strike, the provisional government granted women the right to vote. While the day had been observed in various forms earlier in the early 20th century, March 8th became the global standard to honor the ongoing struggle for women's rights, equality, and justice. The Toolkit To build your 4-Image Fold, gather these supplies: The amomii Template: [GET THE FREE TEMPLATE HERE] Cardstock or A4 Paper: (Use thicker paper for a stronger, more satisfying "flip!") Glue or Double-Sided Tape Scissors or Craft Knife: (Safety First: Always ask an adult for assistance when using sharp cutting tools.) The Build: Step-by-Step Phase 1: Creating the Recatangle 1. Print and Prepare: Print all template pages onto A4 paper. For best results, use thicker cardstock to improve durability and folding performance. 2. Precision Cutting: Carefully cut along all the solid lines using your scissors or craft knife to form rectangular pieces. Avoid cutting the dotted lines—those are your fold guides! 3. Match and Attach: Align the two printed sheets by following the arrow symbols shown on the template. Glue or tape them together carefully to create one combined layout. 4. Create the Window Opening: Cut along the inner rectangle to remove the center section, forming a rectangular opening (like a frame). Phase 2: Folding Structure 5. First Fold:Fold and glue the left and right sides inward toward the center to form a long rectangle. Ensure the illustrations on your image perfectly match the reference photo; correct alignment now is the key to ensuring your image flips correctly later! 6. Second Fold: Repeat the same folding process on the opposite sides, creating a smaller layered rectangle. Press firmly along all folds to ensure clean edges and smooth flipping movement Your creation is complete! Now flip and fold the structure to reveal all four images. Each fold presents a new design celebrating empowerment and achievement as shown below. Success Checklist Fold Check: Do the panels fold smoothly in every direction? Alignment: Do the images align correctly after each fold? Proper alignment ensures all four designs appear clearly. Reveal Test: Can you flip through all four images easily without forcing the paper?
